Commerce moves fast. Shopify moves faster.

Try Shopify

Trending tourism websites move travelers from trip research to a direct reservation with the brand. The booking path can collect first-party guest data and, when done right, give the company more control over developing the guest relationship.

Many travelers use several channels before they book. SiteMinder’s 2026 survey of 12,000 travelers across 14 countries found that 18% of travelers who began hotel research on an online travel agency (OTA) ultimately booked directly with the hotel. That share represented an increase of 3.3 percentage points year over year.

This guide explains how enterprise tourism brands use their websites to win more direct bookings and collect guest data. It also covers personalized trip planning and how to connect checkout, payments, add-ons, and operations.

Imperative 1: Own direct bookings and guest data

Online travel agencies (OTAs) and marketplaces such as Expedia and Airbnb give tourism brands access to large audiences. Bookings made through these channels follow the platform’s fees, data rules, and payout terms.

Tourism brands can use third-party distribution while building direct bookings through their own websites. Looking ahead, the strategy isn’t to leave behind OTAs entirely, but to stop paying rent for every customer relationship.

The cost of indirect sales

Platform costs vary by company and contract. Expedia Group reported $14.7 billion in revenue on $119.6 billion in gross bookings in 2025. Airbnb reported $12.2 billion in revenue and $91.3 billion in gross booking value. Those figures equal about 12.3% and 13.4% of reported booking volume, respectively.

Individual fees depend on the platform and agreement. Under Airbnb’s current single-fee structure, most hosts pay Airbnb 15.5% of what they take in. The structure applies to traditional hospitality listings and hosts who use property management software.

Google Hotel Ads can add an additional acquisition cost. Under maximum cost-per-click bidding, the advertiser pays when a traveler clicks the ad. Payment is due even when the visitor leaves before booking. The direct website must convert enough paid traffic to keep acquisition costs within the brand’s target.

For brands using Shopify, accelerated checkout options like Shop Pay can lift conversion by up to 50% compared to a standard guest checkout. The Sesami Booking App adds scheduling for appointments, rentals, classes, services, and reservations.

Compare OTA and direct bookings across the following areas:

Feature OTA or marketplace Direct booking Booking cost Commission or service fee Commerce and processing fees Guest data Access follows platform terms Collected through brand checkout Payout timing Platform sets payout schedule Payment provider sets settlement Booking experience Platform controls checkout Brand controls checkout Retention marketing Platform controls guest account Brand markets with consent

Calculate acquisition cost and booking value for each channel before changing the distribution mix. Include advertising spend, commissions, payment fees, and cancellations.

Winning the direct booking saves you the commission fee. It also gives you the customer data to invite them back without paying for the introduction twice. The minute your marketing costs drop below OTA fees, start moving customers to your own booking site.

Mobile booking behavior

Mobile apps accounted for a mid-50% share of Booking Holdings’ room nights in 2025, up from a low-50% share in 2024. The company also reported that a significant majority of their mobile app room nights came from direct bookings.

Tourism brands need to test every part of the direct booking process on a phone. Date selection, guest details, add-ons, and payment must remain usable on smaller screens. Test page speed and form completion on common devices before launch.

Shopify Checkout Kit embeds Shopify checkout inside iOS, Android, and React Native apps. It carries the store’s branding, payment methods, and checkout extensions into the app. Shopify processes the payment and creates the order.

Imperative 2: Personalize the trip-planning journey

On a direct booking website, personalization changes what each traveler sees. The changes come from trip details they enter and information they agree to share.

Personalization applies across the website:

  • Recommendations: Rank available rooms and activities for the trip.
  • Search results: Put the most relevant available options first.
  • Bundles: Pair a stay with one relevant experience.
  • Content blocks: Show content related to the selected destination.
  • Add-ons: Display extras available for the chosen booking.
  • Payment options: Present local payment methods when the traveler’s location and currency qualify.
  • Post-booking follow-up: Send information based on the confirmed itinerary. Later messages can reflect the customer’s booking history.

The demand for experiential travel

Hotels, retreats, and tour operators can sell experiences alongside lodging. Wellness tourism is one measure of this spending. The Global Wellness Institute’s 2025 report valued the sector at $893.9 billion in 2024 and projects that it will reach $1.08 trillion in 2026.

Mews commissioned a 2025 survey of 2,000 US travelers. Nearly 80% cited personalized amenities when asked what would make them most likely to return to a hotel. The share reached 89% among Gen Z, while 93% of all respondents said they were willing to share personal data to improve their hotel experience.

Use trip details and customer data in the following booking flows:

  • Package bookable experiences. When a stay and an experience are set up as products, Shopify Bundles can sell them as one fixed package. Keep dates and capacity synchronized with the reservation or property management system.
  • Offer booking-specific add-ons. Use dates, party size, the selected room or activity, and stated interests to display applicable extras.
  • Segment follow-up. Shopify customer segments can group guests using fields such as location, order count, and amount spent. Use those segments to send different content and offers to first-time and returning customers.

AI-driven recommendation engines

An AI recommendation engine interprets a request written in natural language. It uses that request to rank available options.

Booking.com reported in October 2025 that 89% of consumers wanted to use AI in future travel planning. In March 2026, Hilton introduced their AI Planner in beta on Hilton.com. Visitors describe the stay they want. The planner suggests destinations and hotels. It also compares properties and explains available amenities.

Direct booking websites can apply AI at several points:

  • Search: Convert a written request into booking criteria.
  • Recommendations: Rank available offers using the traveler’s stated interests.
  • Post-booking assistance: Answer questions using the confirmed reservation.

The goal is to make digital planning on travel sites feel as natural as a conversation with a travel agent. Marriott’s Homes & Villas, for instance, launched a tool that lets travelers search using natural language.

Instead of checking boxes for “pool” and “3 bedrooms,” you can describe the trip you want, and the engine recommends matching homes and destinations based on what you describe.

When you run your own direct-booking tourism website on Shopify, you can customize the kinds of AI-powered tools that make the most sense for your travel business.

For example, if you are selling a luxury villa or a unique retreat, static photos can fall flat. Shopify’s support for 3D models and augmented reality (AR) apps lets guests virtually walk through a room or venue before they book, reducing purchase hesitation.

For tourism offers sold as Shopify products, Nosto can personalize search results and recommendations. It can also change content blocks using shopper behavior, while keeping standard filters available and only showing offers that can be booked.

Building trust through visual proof

People used to turn to family and friends for travel recommendations. That is still true to an extent, but the social media feed is playing a bigger role every year. According to Amadeus, social media has now overtaken friends and family as the top source of inspiration for US travelers.

Expedia Group’s "2025 Traveler Value Index" found that 61% of travelers get trip ideas from social platforms, and 73% say influencer recommendations have actively influenced a booking decision.

Accor became the first hotel group to launch TikTok’s Dynamic Travel Ads globally. By leaning into creator-style formats, they reported 1.8 times more hotel bookings compared to their standard web conversion ads.

On a boutique level, Le Monastère des Augustines ran an influencer program focused on wellness content. Influencers were invited to experience a stay at the Monastère and discover the services, then post about it online. The program generated over 300,000 impressions.

Influencers who experienced the Le Monastère des Augustines wellness program posted UGC about it online.

Place digital proof near the relevant offer:

  • Destination imagery: Show the actual property and its surroundings. Update the images when seasonal conditions change.
  • User-generated content (UGC): Use traveler photos or creator videos with permission and provide attribution. Link the content to the offer shown.
  • Reviews: Place recent verified reviews beside the relevant offer, including the stay date when available. Show the complete rating distribution.
  • Interactive proof: Add a map to the page and offer a virtual tour or layout. Show current availability in the same place.

Profitable Growth Principles for the Modern CMO

Faced with unforgiving pressure to drive business growth, CMOs need a unified commerce platform to prove their value to the rest of the C-suite.

Imperative 3: Unify commerce and booking conversion

Unified commerce for tourism operations means that the brand website and on-property systems share transaction data:

  • The commerce platform records the order and payment.
  • The booking stack manages the reservation and availability.
  •  The property management system records the stay and guest folio.

A unified structure gives staff a current view of each purchase. It marks prepaid items before the guest reaches the property and gives finance a clear path from the payment settlement to the final folio.

In Adyen’s “2025 Hospitality and Travel Report", 78% of American hospitality businesses said fragmented online and onsite payment systems made operations and reconciliation difficult.

Seamless checkout optimization

Checkout can determine whether trip planning ends in a confirmed booking. The payment flow has to load quickly on mobile and present a familiar way to pay.

While 79% of travelers still cite the ability to use credit or debit cards as a priority, digital wallet usage surged to 28% in 2025. If you force a guest to thumb-type a 16-digit credit card number on a slow mobile form, it’s common for them to leave.

For cross-border tourism brands, accelerated checkout and local payment methods address different sources of payment friction:

  • Accelerated checkout: Shopify’s accelerated checkout reuses saved customer information. Shop Pay is one option. Apple Pay and Google Pay can also appear as express options.
  • Local payment methods: These payment rails appear for eligible customers in specific markets. For example, Bancontact serves customers in Belgium and iDEAL | Wero is available to customers in the Netherlands.

Shopify Payments displays each local method according to the customer’s home country and selected currency. The destination country must also be configured as a market.

For qualifying orders, Shop Pay Installments adds a split-payment option. Shopify currently offers the feature to eligible stores in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Business location and payout currency determine eligibility.

Integrating the full folio

Guests don't care about your tech stack. They expect a single, simple bill at checkout, whether they booked a massage online months ago or bought a coffee at the lobby café five minutes ago.

The operational challenge is syncing that data. Payments, orders, and entitlements might all live in different systems: your web store, your property management system (PMS), and your point of sale (POS). When these systems are disconnected, you end up with manual rekeying, duplicate authorizations, and frustrated staff.

Tourism businesses map these purchases to a reservation or guest profile:

  • Dining: When a guest charges a meal to the room, the restaurant POS sends the approved charge to the PMS under the reservation ID.
  • Spa treatments: An online spa purchase sends the service details to the scheduling system and passes the payment status to the PMS.
  • Excursions: The commerce order reserves a place, while the booking system creates the voucher that staff validates.
  • Venue retail: POS records the purchase against the customer profile, and a PMS integration posts any approved room charge.
  • On-property service charges: The integration applies the property’s tax and gratuity rules before the charge reaches the folio.

In practice, a spa treatment purchased before arrival then appears as paid when the guest checks in, giving staff the correct balance to collect.

If an excursion is canceled, the booking system releases the capacity and passes the cancellation to the commerce refund workflow. At departure, finance can trace each settled payment from Shopify or the POS to the final folio and entry in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.

Foundational technology requirements

To bring a unified vision to life, several systems have to talk to each other:

  • Property management system (PMS): The PMS owns the stay record and guest folio, including approved charges posted during the visit.
  • Central reservation system (CRS): The CRS distributes rates and availability across the brand’s booking channels.
  • Internet booking engine (IBE): The IBE displays direct availability and the total booking price before creating the reservation.
  • Channel manager: This system syncs rates and inventory with OTAs, then sends external reservations back to the booking stack.
  • Commerce and payment platform: Shopify handles checkout for add-ons and retail purchases while recording the order’s payment status.
  • Point-of-sale system (POS): The POS records on-property purchases and sends approved room charges to the PMS.
  • Enterprise resource planning (ERP) system: The ERP receives commerce and settlement data for accounting.

In the past, connecting these systems to your commerce experience required expensive middleware and custom code. Today, unified commerce is the standard.

To implement unified commerce, follow these steps:

  1. Assign each source of truth. The PMS holds reservation and folio data, while the CRS holds availability. Shopify holds the commerce order and its payment status.
  2. Create shared identifiers. Add the reservation ID to the Shopify order, then return the Shopify order ID to the PMS.
  3. Map the payment rules. Define when the deposit is captured and when the balance becomes due. Then map each cancellation to the correct refund action.
  4. Send event updates. Use APIs or webhooks to pass booking changes between systems. Payment and inventory events follow the same process.
  5. Test the complete journey. Test the original booking first, followed by a pre-arrival add-on. Repeat the test after changing the reservation, then confirm that cancellations and partial refunds update every system.
  6. Reconcile the records. Compare payment payouts with the PMS folio each day, then send the final accounting entry to the ERP.

Through the Shopify Global ERP Program, you can connect the commerce layer to your financial and operational systems of record. The program has five certified apps:

  • NetSuite ERP Connector
  • Dynamics 365 Business Central
  • Brightpearl by Sage
  • Acumatica Cloud ERP
  • Infor eCommerce Connector

Enterprise tourism website examples

Enterprise tourism websites make the path from trip research to direct booking easy to follow. The examples below show what each pattern contributes to that journey.

What top tourism website patterns show operators

The table pairs each pattern with the operator decision behind it, with examples of companies that used the strategy to their advantage.

Pattern Enterprise example Operator takeaway Mobile-first booking RIU: device-specific booking flow Shorten the path to payment. AI itinerary support Ask Bonvoy: conversational trip planning Rank options using trip intent. Visual proof Marriott REMI: galleries and 3D tours Place proof beside booking decisions. Localized payments Klook: market-based currencies and wallets Match checkout to customer markets. Unified commerce Airbnb: stays plus services and experiences Add trip products before arrival.

How to apply the patterns to owned channels

Make mobile checkout the shortest path from search to confirmation, then use consented search behavior to personalize direct-booking results. Present payment methods by customer market and place visual proof beside price and availability.

Offer relevant add-ons before payment, and store the guest’s consented data in the customer profile. Pass each add-on’s order and payment status to the PMS so staff know what the guest already purchased. Use the profile for pre-arrival messages and post-stay follow-up.

Build on a commerce platform that can scale

Direct bookings give tourism brands access to guest data that OTAs otherwise control. A scalable commerce platform carries that data into on-property systems and preserves the customer record for future marketing opportunities.

Shopify handles mobile checkout and market-specific payments. Its integrations send add-on orders to the reservation system and guest folio, so staff see what the guest purchased before arrival.

Test platform readiness by tracing one booking from search through the final folio. Record any point where the guest identity disappears or staff have to reenter information, then confirm that the PMS receives the payment and add-on status. Use those findings to set the next integration priorities.

Trending tourism websites FAQ

What are trending tourism websites?

Trending tourism websites reflect how travelers currently research and book trips. They make direct booking easy on mobile, then tailor search results and add-ons to the traveler. Booking data passes into operational systems so staff know what each guest purchased.

Why are direct bookings important for tourism brands?

Direct bookings give tourism brands access to the customer relationship created during checkout. The brand receives consented guest data for service messages and repeat marketing. It also avoids OTA commissions on that reservation, so the operator has more control over margins and the experience delivered before arrival.

How can tourism websites personalize the booking experience?

Tourism websites personalize booking by using consented search behavior and customer history to rank relevant options. For example, a returning spa guest sees wellness packages sooner, and a family receives room results with suitable occupancy. The same data helps staff suggest prearrival add-ons and write post-booking messages.

What role does unified commerce play for tourism websites?

Unified commerce keeps booking and purchase data consistent across the website and on-property systems. A prepaid spa treatment reaches the guest folio with its payment status intact, so staff collect the correct balance. Finance then reconciles the payment against the booking and final folio.

How does mobile checkout affect tourism bookings?

Mobile checkout affects booking completion because slow forms and excessive typing make payment harder to complete. Accelerated checkout reduces manual entry by reusing saved customer details. A responsive booking flow also keeps dates and guest information intact as the traveler moves toward payment.
