Founded in 2016, Bombay Shaving Company began with a single product aimed at turning men's grooming from a chore into an experience. Drawing inspiration from the premium grooming experiences in the US, the brand launched a premium 6-in-1 shaving kit tailored for Indian consumers. Over time, the brand evolved to include a comprehensive grooming and personal care portfolio, now featuring over 300 SKUs across shaving, skincare, and wellness. As their product range and customer base expanded, so too did the complexity of their ecommerce operation.

Initially operating on a custom-built commerce platform, followed by Magento, the team faced roadblocks with slow site updates, technical maintenance, and development delays. In 2021, they migrated to Shopify, simplifying backend operations and gaining the ability they needed to keep pace with a rapidly growing D2C channel. By streamlining operations, automating processes, and enabling non-technical teams to own site updates, the company redirected focus from maintaining tech to scaling the business.

As a digital-first brand with over 300 SKUs and a bold growth strategy, Bombay Shaving Company needed a platform that could keep up with their pace of innovation. With their previous platform, there was no standardised way to list products or build pages, which meant teams often relied on custom workflows for new launches. For example, setting up a new product page involved sharing assets with the tech team and moving through multiple feedback loops, with creation timelines sometimes stretching to several weeks.

As the pace of launches increased, these workflows became harder to sustain. During high-traffic monthly sale events, platform stability also became an important consideration. On earlier platforms, any site issue required immediate troubleshooting and time-consuming coordination to diagnose and resolve, adding operational overhead at critical moments.

Growth and brand managers could directly manage merchandising and page updates themselves, reducing bottlenecks and allowing teams to iterate more quickly without constant reliance on technical resources.

  • Matrixify for generating and managing bulk discount codes
  • Return Prime to automate and optimise return processes

Shopify's analytics suite and customer segmentation tools enabled granular tracking of add-to-cart rates, average order value and retention rates. The team used Shopify's customer segmentation features to re-engage lapsed customers and target high-value cohorts, helping reduce churn and lift repeat purchases.

With improved drop-off tracking and performance benchmarking through Shopify insights, Bombay Shaving Company achieved a 150% uplift in conversion rate compared to its pre-Shopify platform. Moving to Shopify also helped Bombay Shaving Company pursue their house-of-brands strategy. Using Shopify expansion stores, the company now runs 7 independent D2C brands sharing a unified backend. Standardised templates and shared infrastructure mean new brands can be launched quickly using proven page structures and operational playbooks, without rebuilding systems or hiring separate tech teams.

With Shopify in place, Bombay Shaving Company has shifted from managing operational constraints to focusing on growth. Increased platform stability has removed concerns around downtime during peak sales, giving teams the confidence to run frequent high-traffic campaigns without disruption.

Faster launch cycles and simpler workflows have freed up time across teams, enabling quicker experimentation and more frequent updates across products, promotions, and content. Backend resourcing has been more streamlined, with a smaller team now able to support a much larger and faster-moving business.
