Today, we're shipping three things together, because they belong together: Organizations for Partners, role-based access control (RBAC), and a single home for all stores in Dev Dashboard. This is a big step towards simplifying and making building more efficient.
Add a developer to your team, assign their role, and they're set up across every relevant store and surface. Build a store for a client in Dev Dashboard and transfer it to them when it's ready. Manage your entire organization's access from one place, with roles that reflect how your team actually works.
What's new
- Organizations for Partners — Partner orgs now have a formal structure: one Organization Owner, multiple Organization Admins, and Organization Settings in Dev Dashboard where you see and manage your whole team.
- Role-based access control — Assign roles instead of configuring permissions one person at a time. Seven system roles built for how partner orgs actually work. And custom roles let you model permissions tailored to your organization.
- All stores in Dev Dashboard — Dev stores, client transfer stores, and collaborator stores are all in Dev Dashboard. No more switching dashboards to find what you're working on.
Partner organizations now work like merchant organizations
Partners now use the same organizational model Shopify built for merchants: one Organization Owner with full control, and multiple Organization Admins. Organization Settings in Dev Dashboard gives you a single view of your whole team — who's on it, what role they have, and what they can access. It's the structural foundation that makes Role Based Access Control (RBAC) possible, and the place where managing your team actually starts.
A note on ownership
Each partner organization now has one Organization Owner. If your org currently has multiple owners, the primary owner keeps that role and everyone else becomes an Organization Admin - same access, just without the ability to transfer ownership.
What to expect during migration
You don't need to do anything. Starting March 30th, we will automatically migrate your organization and assign roles that match your team's current access.
Any pending user invites for your org have been cancelled. Re-add those users via Users in Organization Settings.
Manage your team with roles
We designed these roles to reflect the real structure of builder organizations: who leads client relationships, who writes code, who creates dev stores, who handles day-to-day operations. Your Shopify organization can finally match your actual organization.
Define a role once: App Developer, Collaborator Store Access, Store Admin. Assign it to as many people as your team needs.
You can assign multiple roles to one person — permissions are additive. Organization Owners and Admins can also create custom roles for anything the system roles don't cover.
The seven system roles
|
Role |
What it covers |
|
Organization Owner |
Full control of the organization. One per organization. The only role that can transfer organization ownership. |
|
Organization Admin |
Same permissions as the Organization Owner, except they cannot transfer the organization. Manage users, create custom roles, full store access. You can have as many as you need. |
|
Organization User Admin |
Manages team members — add, remove, assign existing roles to users. Can't create or edit roles. |
|
Store Admin |
Full access to build on both dev or client transfer stores. Can be scoped to specific stores or all stores. |
|
Store User Admin |
Manages users on specific stores. Can't create or edit stores. Can be scoped to specific stores or all. |
|
App Developer |
Dev Dashboard access for app building and testing, including creating dev stores. |
|
Collaborator Store Access |
Access to merchant stores where the merchant has granted a collaborator relationship. Permissions are still merchant-controlled. Can be scoped to specific collaborator relationships or all. |
All your stores now in Dev Dashboard
Dev stores, client transfer stores, and collaborator stores are all in Dev Dashboard now. One place to create, manage, and hand off your work — no more switching dashboards to find what you're working on.
This is a meaningful step toward making Dev Dashboard the home for building on Shopify. There's more to do, and we're investing in it — but store management is no longer split.
What stays in Partner Dashboard
Payouts, app distribution, themes, and referrals all stay in Partner Dashboard — that hasn't changed.
How to make the most of the new model
After your org migrates, three things worth doing:
- Visit Organization Settings. First time you'll see your whole team, their roles, and what they can access in one view.
- Review your roles. Seven system roles cover most setups. Organization Admins can create custom roles if your team needs something more specific.
- Confirm the right person is Organization Owner. If it should be someone else, they can transfer ownership in Organization Settings.
This is just the start
This is the first of several improvements we're shipping for partners. We're continuing to invest in Dev Dashboard as the long-term home for building on Shopify — there's more coming. We're listening, and we're just getting started.
