How Mocka grew sales by 31% while turning six-hour updates into real-time agility on Shopify

Mocka is a category-leading home and lifestyle retailer with cross-generational appeal and a cross-border presence that spans Australia and New Zealand. Having established itself as a widely-recognised online retailer, Mocka has made in-store retail a central pillar to their ongoing expansion strategy.

But until recently, the platform behind Mocka’s ecommerce success was holding them back. Migrating from BigCommerce to Shopify in 2024 allowed the business to reinvent their operational rhythm, seamlessly expand into physical retail, and deliver seamless omnichannel experiences with a consistent brand presence across all touchpoints.

What used to take overnight developer shifts can now be achieved in hours. With a clear digital roadmap and a flexible platform, Mocka has redefined what it means to be a modern furniture brand.

Since moving to Shopify, Mocka has seen:

  • 31% increase in total Australian sales during FY25
  • 13% lift in quarterly AOV, year-on-year
  • 13% growth in Shop App transactions, quarter-on-quarter

The challenge: Slow updates held back the pace of innovation

Already having scaled to an online business that spanned two countries, when Mocka began eyeing their next stage of growth and expanding substantially into the brick-and-mortar retail realm, they knew they needed a commerce tech stack that could scale with them and support their plans.

Previously, Mocka had been relying on a customised BigCommerce implementation that slowed down innovation and campaign delivery while hampering operational efficiency. Product uploads and promotional rollouts required up to six hours of coordinated work from multiple team members. These changes could often only occur during fixed overnight windows, limiting the brand's ability to act on trading insights, launch new products quickly, or test different customer experiences.

The rigidity of the platform was a major blocker for growth, hindering Mocka’s ability to deliver exceptional customer experience and pursue growth initiatives. Teams were forced to work outside of business hours, and campaigns were held back until development resources or external agency assistance could be allocated.

Our previous platform placed limits on how quickly our team could move. As we looked ahead to the next stage of growth, it became clear that Shopify was the right platform to help us execute initiatives faster and more effectively.

The solution: A faster path to innovation powers multichannel growth

Mocka's move to Shopify was designed to enable agility across ecommerce, retail, and product innovation. The team chose Shopify for its intuitive interface, unified commerce capability, flexible backend, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Campaigns that previously required extensive developer QA cycles could be built in a matter of hours using drag-and-drop templates and metafields. Shopify Flow supported customer journey messaging and automated key workflows, while Shopify Launchpad supported promotional scheduling and theme changes without manual intervention.

Mocka also used Shopify’s Checkout Extensibility and Checkout Blocks to customise their checkout experience, surfacing support contact buttons, trust badges, shipping info, and ‘was and now’ price comparisons at the line-item level. These elements, which are easily configurable in the checkout flow, help to build buyer trust and boost conversion rates.

The use of Shop Pay saw returning customers check out faster, and optimisation of the Shop App profile to highlight ranges appealing to customer personas and flag bestsellers helped to drive a 13% quarter-on-quarter lift in transactions.

Meanwhile, the Sidekick AI assistant improved internal accuracy and agility by helping the ecommerce team verify code, identify trending products for merchandising, and generate trade insights. With Sidekick, such insight could be uncovered in minutes, using natural language queries, saving time and effort. Shopify POS also powered the launch of Mocka’s Christchurch lab store, where retail staff use tablets to replicate the online experience in-store and access customer data in real time, marking a major milestone in the company’s retail ambitions.

With Shopify, the speed of innovation and delivery is totally different. Our ecommerce team can make home page updates, launch collections, and optimise product pages without waiting for developer tickets. Our ability to maintain a competitive pace with the market as we expand into different channels is assured.

The results: Trading smarter and scaling faster

With Shopify powering their omnichannel retail journey, Mocka has transformed their operating model. Instead of limiting new campaigns to specific days, teams can now respond to customer and trading insights in real time. This has led to tangible outcomes. In FY25, Mocka’s pre-tax earnings grew by 21% and the company increased total sales by 15%, with Australia seeing 31% year-on-year growth.

New product updates have also accelerated, with ecommerce team members now able to update homepage content themselves, reducing the turnaround time on website projects from days to hours. New collections like Youth & Teen, Lighting, and Outdoor were launched within months thanks to Shopify’s scalable templates and app integrations.

With expansion into in-store retail and new product categories such as sofas, along with a roadmap that includes delivery-to-the-room services powered by third-party plug-in apps in Shopify, Mocka is building on the momentum created by their digital transformation and realising their organisational goals.

Moving to Shopify has given Mocka the ability to move faster, test a greater volume of releases and react to trading conditions dynamically. We are bringing more campaigns to market with speed and with fewer resources. It has also given us the tools to maintain brand consistency and reduce the time spent on website development and admin to focus on high-impact business projects.
